Jordan Rosin

Directory of Butoh Artists /Dancers Worldwide

About the List

This list is a work-in-progress (last updated November 20, 2022) and – in large part – expanded from the directory at www.butoh.net (last updated on October 28, 2009) via online research and individual submissions/recommendations.

In establishing a clear criteria for this list, to the best of my ability, I have opted to use the following semantic delineations adapted from Vangeline Theater / NY Butoh Institute

  • A Butoh dancer is a professional who has dedicated their life to the art form of Butoh and achieved recognition for their work (eg. members of Sankai Juku, Dairakudakan, the original Asbestos Kan, etc.)
  • A Butoh artist is anyone whose creative practice is primarily based in Butoh Dance.

That said, it should be acknowledged that there are countless truly incredible artists around the globe who are creating exciting interdisciplinary performative work that could be called “butoh-influenced“, “butoh-inspired“, or “post-butoh.” However, since one objective of this list is to provide clear pathways to learning, apprenticeship, and participation in the various lineages of Butoh Dance, only persons and companies meeting either the above two criteria will be included here. Exceptions are made for artists with significant history of practice in Butoh Dance who now classify their creative work as something else, but who continue to teach Butoh.

If you know of a person or company not on this list that you would like to see included, e-mail me at jordan@jordanrosin.com.

Note: Given the difficulty in defining Butoh, the numerous approaches in existence, and the somewhat self-selective nature of this list, it should be noted that inclusion here does not constitute an endorsement by Jordan Rosin – Yoga, Butoh, Physical Theatre.
