River Bank Dance Workshop in Blue Lake, CA
with Jordan Rosin
October 15, 2016, 4:00pm – 6:00pm
on the banks of the Mad River in Blue Lake, CA near Hatchery Road Bridge.
Humboldt County residents are intimately aware of the Mad River. Most rely on it in some form or other, some for fishing or irrigation, many for their drinking water. But how much do we know about the river’s history? It’s nature? It’s spirit?
The Mill Creek-Mad River Subasin of California’s Lower Mad River reaches to the southernmost edge of the city of Blue Lake. Here, the river’s immediate tributaries include the North Fork Mad River, Mill Creek, Sullivan Gulch, Puter Creek, and Boundary Creek. The Mad River is home to Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead and Rainbow Trout. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the critically-imperiled, purple-petaled Erigeron maniopotamicus or “Mad River Fleabane.” For those inclined to see it, the river banks covered with greywacke sandstone, resplendent with wildlife and teaming with vegetation, can provide a unique portal into ages past.
Using techniques of meditation, yoga, and Japanese Butoh Dance, award-winning choreographer Jordan Rosin (Int’l: Butoh Medea, FringeNYC: Butoh Electra, Artistic Director Emeritus of the NYC-based physical theatre ensemble The Ume Group), leads workshop participants on a guided journey to embody the river’s vibrant ecology, channel the spirit of its water, and investigate our deeper selves in relationship to the natural world.
All ages and abilities welcome. No previous dance experience required.

What is butoh?
Butoh is a post-modern, expressionistic and highly personal dance-form / creative philosophy originating from post WWII Japan. Its practice can aid in recovering memories, desires, and dreams hidden inside the body. Through use of neutrality, embodiment, disequilibrium, energetic sensitivity, Jordan’s butoh classes aim to spark a deeply physical exploration of our own psychology, and unlock the unique dance within each person.
